Dubbed the Damien Hirst of Delhi, Subodh Gupta preempted Hirst in 2006, creating Very Hungry God (left, outside the Palazzo Grassi in Venice), a giant skull rendered in stainless steel pots and pans before Hirst opted for diamonds (right). Gupta’s Very Hungry God is owned by Christie’s proprietor Francois Pinault, who owns the Palazzo Grassi. Hirst’s For the Love of God is owned by an unknown consortium, including the artist, his dealer Jay Jopling, and his business manager Frank Dunphy, who reportedly paid $100 million for it.
